Aluminum, ductile iron, steel, and plastic

Reliance Foundry uses only top-quality materials to guarantee an extended service life for a range of decorative and utility applications. All bollards are made from fully recyclable materials, and require minimal maintenance.


Aluminum is a lightweight and easily castable material, attributes which make is ideal for removable applications and more ornamental designs. Exposed aluminum naturally oxidizes to form a passive barrier that protects against corrosion. This natural corrosion resistance makes aluminum suitable for high saline environments. Aluminum is used in architectural and decorative bollards.


Concrete bollards have a clean, natural finish featuring exposed aggregate from the Pacific Northwest. Because it is easy to mold, concrete is suitable for a range of decorative designs. Concrete bollards are formed with high-pressure cement for enhanced strength and durability.

Ductile iron

Ductile iron is extremely castable, ideal for ornamental products that feature intricate shapes and textures. Unlike standard cast iron, which is brittle in nature, ductile iron is made using small amounts of magnesium or cerium to manipulate carbon into forms that won’t compromise integrity under stress. The result is a metal with high impact properties and resistance to long-term fatigue. Ductile iron is used in many architectural and decorative bollards.

Cast Steel

Cast steel is a ferrous alloy with a maximum carbon content of 0.75 percent. Some grades of cast steel are alloyed with small amounts of manganese, silicon, sulfur, or phosphorus to produce a specific property, like hardenability or greater corrosion resistance. Mechanical properties for cast steel are generally lower than wrought steels with the same chemical composition. Cast steel compensates for that disadvantage with its ability to form complex shapes in few steps.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel offers a structural versatility similar to standard steel, but with a clean metallic finish and exceptional corrosion resistance. All Reliance Foundry stainless steel products are manufactured from 316-grade stainless steel—designed especially for marine applications and strong resistance to chemical corrosion. Its bright and partially reflective surface makes stainless steel an ideal complement for many existing building and landscape designs. Alternately, stainless steel products can be powder coated to match site aesthetics.

Standard steel

Standard steel is a versatile and exceptionally strong material. Steel bollards are machined from prefabricated materials. They offer an economical solution for high-end, uniform finishes. Standard steel bollards are powder coated in 1 of 6 standard colors to increase visual quality and to protect against corrosion and wear. Standard steel is used in removable, fold down, bike parking, architectural and decorative bollards.

Structural grade steel

Steel pipe security bollards use ASTM 500 B structural grade steel to offer strong impact protection. Steel pipe bollards come coated with primer. They should be painted or covered with a protective sleeve to prevent corrosion. An engineer should be consulted for site-specific security applications.


Polyethylene is a durable and lightweight material. When used outdoors, it won’t fade or chip, and it will resist marking from collisions and chemical wear from solvents and de-icing salts. Polyethylene offers an economical means to providing long-term protection for security pipe bollards against corrosion and wear. It is ideal for highly corrosive environments. Polyethylene is used in standard utility and decorative plastic post covers.


Polyurethane is a versatile plastic material that will give way to vehicle impacts—bending up to 90 degrees—without losing its shape. Polyurethane will resist scratches and dents, won’t fade from ultraviolet sun exposure and will show minimal marking from vehicle collisions. Bollards made from polyurethane also minimize damage to vehicles in the event of a collision. Polyurethane is used in flexible bollards.
