Installing Bike Bollard Covers using Threaded Rods

Home > How to Install Commercial Bicycle Racks and Bike Bollards > Installing Bike Bollard Covers using Threaded Rods

Protect pipe bollards while adding secure bike parking features by using Reliance Foundry’s line of bike bollard covers. In this installation method, bike bollard covers are installed using threaded rods secured into new concrete inside the pipe bollards. Please note that this method is only usable for steel pipe bollards without any pre-existing fill, so be sure to check this before proceeding. If the post is already filled, please use the concrete anchor or adhesive anchoring installation method instead.

Adding bike bollard covers to existing pipe bollards will not affect impact resistance. The level of impact resistance is directly related to the original installation.

NOTE

Before installation

Inspect the pipe bollard
Examine the pre-installed pipe bollard for signs of damage. Any rust should be removed, and abrasions should be covered as soon as possible. If the damage is beyond repair, a new pipe bollard may need to be installed.

Ensure the pipe bollard does not have any pre-existing concrete fill. Hold a level vertically against the side of the pipe bollard and ensure that it is plumb. If the pipe is not plumb, it may need to be reinstalled, or the cover will not sit properly.

Note: Any damage or tilting of the pipe bollard can affect the performance of the bollard cover.

Clean and dry the pipe bollard
Brush or wipe the surface of the pipe bollard. Debris can offset measurements and the placement of the bollard cover.

Fill the pipe bollard with concrete
Mix the concrete. Ensure that the proper ratio of water and concrete mix is used. The concrete should have a similar texture to moldable clay.

Using a shovel, fill the pipe bollard with concrete leaving approximately 1″ of the top clear.

Create a flat surface at the top of the pipe bollard.

Clean the surface of the pipe bollard

Use a cloth to clean off any residue, dust, or debris.

Install the bike bollard cover

There are two options for installing the bike bollard cover and inserting the threaded rod. Option 1: Insert the threaded rod after bike bollard cover placement, or Option 2: Insert the threaded rod prior to bike bollard cover placement.

Option 1 (insert threaded rod after bike bollard cover placement)

Prepare the bike bollard cover for installation
Keep the bike bollard cover in its protective packaging and place near the installation site.

When ready to install, remove its protective packaging.

Set the bike bollard cover
Lift the bike bollard cover and carefully lower over the pipe bollard so that the pipe bollard is centered in the bike bollard cover’s shaft.

Note: Metal bike bollard covers can be heavy—to prevent accidents and injuries, ensure the proper resources are available to lift them into place or onto their mountings.

Prepare the threaded rod
Fix the 1″ nut to the bottom portion of the threaded rod.

Lower the threaded rod
Push the threaded rod into the concrete down the center of the pipe bollard—leaving an allowance at the top for the washer and 1″ nut to be applied later.

Note: If the threaded rod will not fit through the center hole of the bike bollard cover, remove the 1″ nut from the bottom, then insert the rod through the center hole. Once the rod is partially inserted, apply the 1″ nut to the bottom of the rod through the opening of the bike bollard cover.

Measure the total distance from the surface grade to the top of the threaded rod. Ensure that this total distance does not exceed the maximum bar height in the product drawing.

Note: The maximum bar height differs based on the bike bollard cover model. Refer to product drawings to determine specific measurements.

Option 2 (insert threaded rod prior to bike bollard cover placement)

Prepare the bike bollard cover for installation
Keep the bike bollard cover in its protective packaging and place near the installation site.

When ready to install, remove the protective packaging.

Prepare the threaded rod
Fix the 1″ nut to the bottom portion of the threaded rod.

Lower the threaded rod
Push the threaded rod into the concrete down the center of the pipe bollard—leaving an allowance at the top for the washer and 1″ nut to be applied later.

Check that the threaded rod is centered and ensure it is plumb.

Place the bike bollard cover over the pipe bollard
Lift the bike bollard cover and carefully lower it over the pipe bollard and threaded rod.

Ensure the pipe bollard is centered in the bike bollard cover’s shaft and the bike bollard cover is plumb.

Note: Metal covers can be heavy—to prevent accidents and injuries, ensure the proper resources are available to lift covers into place or onto their mountings.

Measure the total distance from the surface grade to the top of the threaded rod. Ensure that this total distance does not exceed the maximum bar height in the product drawing.

Note: The maximum bar height differs based on the bike bollard cover model. Refer to product drawings to determine specific measurements.

Secure the bike bollard cover and cap

Apply the washer and nut
Place the washer over the threaded rod so that it rests on top of the shaft of the bike bollard cover.

Apply the 1″ nut to the threaded rod and hand tighten.

Note: Be sure to check the orientation of the bike bollard cover arms before securing the bike bollard cover.

Allow the concrete to cure
A minimum of 2–3 days should be given for concrete to cure.

Note: Moisture in the environment and cool temperatures can significantly slow the process.

Secure the bike bollard cover
Use a wrench to further tighten the 1″ nut until the bike bollard cover is secure.

Secure the bike bollard cover cap
Remove the bike bollard cover cap from its packaging.

Place the cap on the top of the shaft of the bike bollard cover.

Secure and align the cap to the base with the three set screws. Tighten in equal amounts to ensure that the cap remains centered.

Place the plastic plugs over the set screws.

Inspect

Inspect the installation
From a distance, examine the plane of view.

Ensure the bike bollard is plumb to the surface, and the surface is flat.

Check the bike bollard for any signs of surface damage
Abrasions should be covered as soon as possible to prevent rust and ensure the proper life of the bike bollard. For damage repair or other servicing needs, please contact Reliance Foundry’s sales department.

Care and maintenance
