Installation: Removable Bike Bollards with Chain Receivers
A straightforward guide to installing removable bike bollards with receivers that feature locking chains
With Reliance Foundry’s premier line of removable bike bollards, access can be granted or restricted to accommodate the changing needs of new streetscapes. Select bike bollards can be removed by simply unfastening a pad lock and chain that attaches the bike bollard to the receiver. It is a convenient solution that provides the ultimate in flexibility of access control.
With this installation method, the bike bollard is intended to act as solely visual traffic deterrent that will restrict or limit access to particular areas while providing secure bicycle storage. It is important to note that, with this installation method, the bike bollard will offer little impact resistance.
Installation Equipment Required
- Chalk Line
- Dirt Tamper (optional)
- Touch-up paint (can be easily sourced at automotive parts stores)
Surface Preparation and Determining Layout
* NOTE: Bike bollards should be left in their packaging until the exact moment of installation
- Study the site plans:
Site plans are generally created by the architect of the project. The architect will mark the intended location of each bike bollard on the plan. Ensure that the plan coincides with the site and familiarize yourself with the intended arrangement of the bike bollards.
- Ensure that the site is ready to receive the concrete:
The area that surrounds the receiver should be dug to a minimum depth of 14” and at least 2” of drain rock should be placed below the receiver. The minimum width of the hole that will hold the receiver should be 9”. The general surface area should be properly formed with wood placed on its side to create a perimeter that will hold the wet concrete.
- Designate where each bike bollard will stand:
If the bike bollards are intended to be installed to create a uniform-looking straight line, many contractors find it beneficial to snap a chalk line. This will help determine the center-point of each receiver that will hold a bike bollard. The center-point of each receiver should be marked with chalk, spray-paint or a felt pen.
- Place each receiver in its designated location:
Remove the receiver’s plastic packaging and set it on the drain rock. Ensure that it is sitting level. Remember that the receiver is 12” high; make certain that it will sit flush with the finished concrete’s surface.
Pouring the Concrete
- Mix and pour the concrete:
Ensure that the proper ratio of water and concrete mix is used. The concrete should have a similar texture to mouldable clay. Pour the concrete evenly and avoid disrupting the casting anchors.
- Allow the concrete to cure:
A lot of elements factor into a concrete surface’s cure time. Moisture in the environment and cool temperatures can both significantly slow the process. It is generally recommended that a minimum of 2 -3 days wait should be given before beginning construction projects on new concrete surfaces.
Installing the Bike Bollard
- Place the bike bollard in the receiver:
Remove the cardboard and plastic packaging from the bike bollard and carefully lower it into the receiver to avoid damaging the bollards surface. Lift the chain and set it over the stud. Attach the pad lock and fasten it.
- Inspect the installation:
At a distance, examine the plain of view. All bike bollards should appear to be perpendicular with the surface of the concrete.
- Check the bike bollard for any signs of surface damage:
If the bike bollard was scratched or scraped during installation, it can be repaired with touch up paint, commonly found at automotive stores. Abrasions must be covered to avoid rust and ensure the proper life of the bike bollard.
