What is a Bollard?
Bollards originated as boat moorings on docks around the world. Legend has it that street bollards were created after Admiral Nelson led the British Navy to the decisive defeat of the French and Spanish fleets commanded by Napoleon Bonaparte in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Cannons from the captured ships, the story goes, were too large for British ships so London began using these adapted barrels to prevent cart wheels from destroying street curbs and demarcate landscapes. Bollard Types, Finishes, and Features
The most common bollard type is a fixed metal security bollard, typically a concrete or steel post about 36" high, installed into the ground with concrete. Some bollards are square, but most are cylindrical with a domed, angled, or other cap detail at the top. Happily, to create a better appearance, decorative bollards and bollard covers in a wide variety of sizes, colors, materials, shapes and capabilities that grace many streetscapes.
