Stainless Steel Bike Racks Installed to Coincide with Bike Share Program
New York's Maritime Hotel installs circular bike racks
In the summer of 2012, the city of New York implemented a bike share program that allowed 10,000 Bike Share Bicycles available all over the city at 600 stations, creating the biggest bike share program in the nation. The bike share program is but one of the many ways that Mayor Bloomberg and the Department of Transportation are encouraging New Yorkers to switch from cars to bicycles.
Many forward-thinking businesses, like the Maritime Hotel, realized the opportunity that this new program would create. As far back as 2006, they were already offering complimentary bicycles as an amenity to guests of their hotel. They saw this perk as a way to be considerate of their high numbers of European clientele (bicycling is more common in European countries as a way of transportation), as a way to enable guests to take advantage of the hotel’s close proximity to some great bicycle paths, and as a way to take action to reduce their overall carbon footprint. The management of the hotel knew that the bike share program would put many more cyclists on the street and those cyclists could become potential customers, providing the correct amenities were available. In late 2011, they began to install stainless steel bike racks as a way to proactively bring the new cyclists to their hotel.
“The bike stands provided by Reliance Foundry are quickly becoming a place where visitors to New York City find connection,” said Callen Polmer, Director of Sales and Public Relations for The Maritime Hotel. “The bike stands are a great place for our guests to intermingle and become part of the neighborhood by integrating them into the thriving NYC bike culture.”
The Maritime Hotel selected Reliance Foundry’s signature bike rack for this endeavour – the model R-8224-SS stainless steel bike rack. It can be surface-mounted on existing concrete surfaces or embedded in new concrete to provide secure bike parking. Each rack provides parking for two bikes and they can be installed in groups, as they were at the Maritime Hotel, to create bike corrals and provide the exact level of parking required. Reliance Foundry also offers corresponding models that are composed of powder-coated steel and models that are created from square, as opposed to round, tubing. Its architectural versatility allowed it to work with the décor of each of the hotel’s dining venues and observant eyes will also notice that the porthole shape of the bike rack compliments the overall, nautical theme of the hotel.
When a hotel can make its guests feel like they are more than just visitors to a city, they provide an experience to which guests will want to return. The Maritime has three different dining experiences available in their hotel, and offering the bicycle parking enables guests to come and dine without having to worry about locating parking on the narrow streets of New York, or in the expensive parking garage across the street. Providing secure bike parking is a solution to increasing accessibility that pays dividends!
