New Retractable Bollards: Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel
316-grade stainless steel ensures long-term performance in corrosive environments

Reliance Foundry Co. Ltd., North America's premier supplier of bollards, custom castings and bike-parking products, announced a newly updated line of R-8400 stainless steel bollards—featuring retractable, removable and fixed mountings. Made with high-quality 316 stainless steel, the new bollards offer a much higher resilience to corrosion—making them suitable for marine applications and other corrosive environments.
"Because retractable bollards spend a lot of time underground and are housed in a hollow receiver, moisture can present a severe challenge," says Rick Pasternak, Sales Manager at Reliance Foundry. "A stronger-than-normal composition is required in areas with high amounts of moisture."
316 stainless steel features high chromium and nickel content, and is also alloyed with molybdenum for exceptional resistance to corrosion. The material is often used in marine applications, where high exposure to salt water is common, and to resist corrosion from industrial chemicals and solvents. These properties make the new line of R-8400 bollards suitable for use in high-saline environments where exposure to sea water spray and/or de-icing salts may be typical.
Easily retract bollards into ground
"We're excited about the new possibilities for our improved line of retractable bollards," says Reliance Foundry's President, Brent Done. "Being able to withstand tougher climates, we think they'll become a popular product for customers looking for a convenient form of access control."
R-8400 bollards feature a range of versatile mounting options—including retractable, removable and fixed hardware—making them suitable for a range of applications and mixed-use spaces. Retractable bollards can be lowered fully below ground, closing flush with paved surfaces to ensure minimal obstruction for vehicles and pedestrians. Storing bollards below ground can also save time and labor for posts that would otherwise need to be removed and transported to an additional storage area. Removable bollards can be detached from their mountings for quick access to controlled areas. Removable mountings require much less excavation than retractable bollards and are easier to maintain.
R-8400 bollards can be installed with fixed mountings, embedded into ground for permanent installations. A range of mounting options ensure versatile accommodations in mixed-use areas while maintaining consistent aesthetics within a series of bollards. Powder-coated versions of the new 316 stainless steel bollards are available in 6 standard covers to increase visibility or complement existing building and landscape designs.
